Willem Einthoven entdeckte den Herzschlag und baute eine Maschine, die den elektrischen Strom messen konnte, den ein Herz erzeugt. Es wog 600 Pfund<\/p>\n

Ein Elektrokardiogramm \u2013 umgangssprachlich EKG oder EKG genannt \u2013 misst die kleinen elektrischen Wellen, die ein menschliches Herz erzeugt. Das geschieht schon seit mehr als einem Jahrhundert. Und da Herzerkrankungen auch heute noch eine der h\u00e4ufigsten Todesursachen sind, sind sie nach wie vor einer der am h\u00e4ufigsten verwendeten Tests in der modernen Medizin<\/p>\n

Geburt des EKG<\/strong><\/p>\n

Der niederl\u00e4ndische Wissenschaftler Willem Einthoven, der f\u00fcr das Meisterwerk der Medizintechnik einen Nobelpreis erhielt, baute auf einer langen Geschichte der Herzschlagverfolgung auf, die im sp\u00e4ten 18. Jahrhundert begann. Ein Wendepunkt kam im Jahr 1872, als Gabriel Lippman ein Ger\u00e4t namens Kapillarelektrometer entwickelte, mit dem die durch den Herzschlag erzeugten Spannungs\u00e4nderungen an der K\u00f6rperoberfl\u00e4che gemessen werden konnten. A.D. Waller erfasste 1887 mithilfe von Lippmans Erfindung die erste tats\u00e4chliche Messung des Herzschlags<\/p>\n

Die Dinge, die diese w\u00fcrdigen Vorg\u00e4nger nicht ber\u00fccksichtigten, waren Tr\u00e4gheit und Reibung innerhalb der Kapillaren, sodass ihre Aufzeichnungen bestenfalls unvollkommen waren. Willem Einthoven korrigierte dies ab 1901. Zun\u00e4chst verwendete er mathematische Gleichungen, um Ungenauigkeiten in den mittlerweile vertrauten T\u00e4lern und Gipfeln, die durch die Bewegungen der Maschine auf Fotopapier entstanden waren, von Hand zu korrigieren. Innerhalb weniger Jahre verbesserte er den Prozess, indem er das Saitengalvanometer (auf dem Tisch, in der Mitte) entwickelte, das die Korrekturen automatisch f\u00fcr ihn durchf\u00fchrte<\/p>\n<\/div>

Ohne einen Schlag auszulassen<\/p>\n

Das 12-Kanal-EKG-Ger\u00e4t ist heute Standard und misst die elektrischen Signale des Herzens aus 12 verschiedenen Winkeln<\/p>\n

Der elektrische Impuls, der die Kontraktion \u2013 oder den Schlag \u2013 eines Herzmuskels ausl\u00f6st, beginnt an der Oberseite des Organs und breitet sich nach unten aus. Einthoven brachte an beiden Armen und am linken Bein Elektroden an, eine Anordnung, die sp\u00e4ter Einthovens Dreieck genannt wurde, um den Weg des elektrischen Stroms vom oberen rechten Quadranten zum unteren linken Quadranten zu erfassen. Die ersten Elektroden waren mit Kochsalzl\u00f6sung gef\u00fcllte Gef\u00e4\u00dfe, die jeden Teil des Dreiecks umsp\u00fclten, was kurz gesagt bedeutete, dass die Patienten ihre H\u00e4nde und F\u00fc\u00dfe in Eimer tauchen mussten (siehe oben).<\/p>\n

EKGs wurden erstmals 1909 zur Untersuchung von Herzrhythmusst\u00f6rungen eingesetzt und dienten der klinischen Diagnose unregelm\u00e4\u00dfiger Herzschl\u00e4ge. Ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter wurden sie verwendet, um die hohen, abgerundeten Plateaus zu finden, die auf einen Herzinfarkt hindeuteten. Innerhalb von zwei Jahrzehnten waren EKGs der Standardtest, um festzustellen, ob Brustschmerzen vom Herzen herr\u00fchrten oder nicht und was genau im Herzen vor sich ging, das diese Schmerzen verursachte<\/p>\n<\/div>

Die Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company aus London \u2013 1881 von Charles Darwins j\u00fcngstem Sohn Horace mitbegr\u00fcndet \u2013 konstruierte 1911 das erste Tischmodell von Einthovens Elektrokardiogramm (oben). Es wog satte 600 Pfund und f\u00fcr die Bedienung waren f\u00fcnf Personen n\u00f6tig<\/p>\n

Im Laufe des Jahrhunderts verlor die Maschine betr\u00e4chtlich an Gewicht, aber nicht an klinischem Gewicht. Das moderne EKG wiegt nur 8 Pfund und bleibt der Goldstandard, wenn es darum geht, keinen Schlag
